Traditional Sambar


Most of us rely on ready made sambar powder from stores. Here's a traditional option to make healthy sambar at home everyday.
It will taste awesome! Try it out..

Ingredients:

  1. Thoor Dhal - 1 cup
  2. Water - 2 cups
  3. Onions- 1
  4. Tomatoes- 2
  5. Turmeric powder- 1/4 tsp
  6. Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
  7. Coriander chopped- 1 small cup
  8. Curry leaves - few
  9. Vegetable (any) - chopped ( i have used 2 radish)
  10. Tamarind - gooseberry size
  11. Sambar powder- 2 tsp
  12. Coconut grated - 2 tsp ( optional)

Method:

  • In a pressure cooker, add dhal and water
  • Add chopped tomatoes along with dhal
  • In a small bowl, add chopped vegetables and onions
  • Place the bowl inside cooker 
  • Pressure cook for 3 whistles
  • mash the dhal smooth (after removing the small bowl with veg)
  • In a pan, splutter mustard seeds and add curry leaves
  • Transfer the dhal to the pan, saute.
  • Add extracted tamarind water
  • Allow it to boil
  • Add Sambar powder
  • Add turmeric
  • Allow it to boil for 10 mins
  • Add grated coconut (Optional)
  • Add coriander

Tips:

  1. More tomatoes and less tamarind will give splendid taste to sambar :)
  2. More it boils more the taste is :)
